The Truth About INVOcell: 8 Myths I Hear Most
Is INVOcell "IVF at home"? Less effective without a lab? Let's challenge 8 common INVOcell myths with the facts every Houston patient should know.

In more than 25 years of helping patients build their families, I’ve noticed that INVOcell® comes with more misunderstandings than almost any treatment I offer. It makes sense. INVOcell works differently from conventional IVF, and anything different tends to collect assumptions. Some of those assumptions are harmless. Others are not, because I’ve watched them quietly talk patients out of an option that would have been a wonderful fit, or push them toward a more expensive, more intensive treatment they didn’t actually need.
So let me set the record straight. Here are the eight myths about INVOcell I hear most often, and the truth behind each one.

Simple by design, sophisticated by nature. INVOcell lets your body do what a lab incubator otherwise would. Let's look at what this solution is, what it is not, and why we proudly offer it.
Myth #1
“INVOcell is basically IVF you do at home.”
The Truth
There is nothing do-it-yourself about INVOcell. Your eggs are retrieved and combined with sperm by our team, the device is prepared in our office, and an embryologist evaluates the embryos afterward, with the same clinical oversight you would expect from any in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. The one real difference is where the earliest days of incubation happen: inside your body instead of a laboratory incubator. You are monitored by us the entire way.
Myth #2
“Without a lab incubator, it can’t be as effective.”
The Truth
This is the one I most want patients to hear. Clinical trials show INVOcell pregnancy and live birth rates that are comparable to IVF, and three to five times higher than intrauterine insemination (IUI). The reason is simpler than people expect: an embryo needs a stable temperature and pH in its first few days, and your body holds both naturally, around the clock. In other words, this isn’t a weaker version of IVF. It is a different, and for many patients equally effective, path to the same goal.
Myth #3
“INVOcell is new or experimental.”
The Truth
INVOcell is the first FDA-approved intravaginal culture (IVC) system. It is approved, established, and has been used successfully for years. In fact, our practice was the first in Houston to offer INVOcell. Choosing it is not a leap into the unknown; it is a well-understood treatment with a proven track record.
Myth #4
“If it costs less, the care must be lower quality.”
The Truth
The lower price, $9,400 with PGT included compared with $13,400 for IVF with PGT, comes from removing laboratory incubation fees. Your body handles the incubation that a lab would otherwise charge for, and that savings is passed on to you. If anything, you get more built in: every INVOcell cycle at our practice includes preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), so we can transfer only chromosomally normal embryos. Making excellent care more affordable was my goal when I founded this practice, and INVOcell is one of the clearest ways I’ve found to do it.

Myth #5
“INVOcell is a good fit for anyone who wants a cheaper option.”
The Truth
I wish it were that simple, but INVOcell isn’t right for everyone. It tends to be an excellent fit for patients with blocked fallopian tubes or a previous tubal ligation, ovulatory dysfunction, unexplained infertility, or mild to moderate sperm abnormalities, along with normal AMH levels and antral follicle count. It is generally not recommended when severe male-factor infertility is involved. That is exactly why we begin with a thorough evaluation, including a hormonal assessment, a saline sonohysterogram, and a semen analysis, before recommending it. Cost should open a door to the right treatment; it should never decide it for you.
Myth #6
“The device will be uncomfortable, and I’ll have to put my life on hold.”
The Truth
The INVOcell device is designed to be worn discreetly and comfortably during the few days of incubation. Most of my patients continue their normal routines, including work and time with family, with little more than an awareness that it is there. Just as important, the stimulation phase leading up to it is milder than a standard IVF protocol, which tends to mean more comfort and a lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). We give you clear guidance on what to expect and what to avoid, and we are only a phone call away the entire time.
Myth #7
“With INVOcell you only get one shot and can’t freeze embryos for later.”
The Truth
Not so. Because we perform PGT on every INVOcell cycle, a frozen embryo transfer is part of the process: the embryos are cryopreserved while we await the genetic results, and the healthiest is transferred afterward. If more than one healthy embryo develops, the additional embryos can stay frozen and stored for the future, whether that is a sibling down the road or another transfer. The embryos we freeze have already been screened, which gives you real confidence in what is waiting for you.
Myth #8
“INVOcell isn’t an option for same-sex couples.”
The Truth
Not at all. We offer Reciprocal INVOcell with PGT, which lets one partner provide the eggs while the other carries the pregnancy, so both share directly in bringing your child into the world. Whether you are exploring LGBTQ family building or another path to parenthood, INVOcell can often be part of the plan. We will talk through exactly what is possible for your family during your consultation.
If you take one thing from this, let it be this: INVOcell is not a lesser version of IVF, and it is not a shortcut. For the right patient, it is a gentler, more affordable path to the same goal, backed by the same science and the same careful team. The only way to know whether you are that patient is to look at your specific situation together, honestly and without pressure. That conversation is where every myth finally gives way to a real answer.
