A woman taking a fertility drugAt Houston Fertility Center, we've achieved exceptional results thanks to advanced fertility treatments. This is particularly true with in vitro fertilization (IVF), a highly effecitve and popular solution for male and/or female infertility.

Part of the IVF treatment process involves the use of fertility drugs. These medications are a crucial part of ensuring IVF success, so we'd like to take a moment right now to go over the basics of fertility medications and why they are so important.

Why are fertility drugs necessary for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment?

Fertility drugs help regulate a woman's cycle, improve a woman's fertility, promote the release of multiple eggs during ovulation, and enhance the chances of successful IVF treatment. In essence, fertility medications are key for enhancing overall chances of success when it comes to assisted reproductive techniques.

Common Fertility Drugs Given to Patients

The following drugs are commonly used during IVF treatment:

  • Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) - These kinds of drugs help prevent early ovulation. Brand names for these drugs include Antagon and Cetrolide.
  • Clomiphene - This helps promote the release of multiple eggs from the ovaries during ovulation by triggering the production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH). Brand names for clomiphene include Clomid and Serophene.
  • Medrol - This medication is a type of steroid that helps prepare a woman's body for the embryo implantation portion of the IVF process.
  • Doxycycline - This drug is given to men to ensure that there is no unwanted bacteria that appears in the sperm, which helps improve chances of a successful, problem-free pregnancy.
  • Natural Progesterone - Progesterone levels can sometimes become altered as part of the egg retrieval phase of IVF. To help balance out these levels, patients can take natural progesterone.

Additional medications and specific dosages can be discussed in more detail during the consultation process with your fertility specialist.

Potential Side Effects of Fertility Drugs

Common side effects of IVF fertility drugs can vary. These include headaches, sensations of nausea, mild fluctuations in vision, hot flashes, bloating, and so on. Some more serious side effects of the IVF fertility drugs include an increased likelihood of multiple births (twins, triplets), ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and ectopic pregnancy.

Your fertility specialist will go over all of the risks and benefits in greater detail during your visit to ensure you understand the nature of your procedure.

Considering All of Your Options for Effective Treatment

In addition to discussing the risks and benefits of using fertility drugs and explaining the full nature of the IVF process, your fertility doctor will also go over some alternative therapies that can help increase your chances of successful pregnancy and childbirth. The consultation process is your chance for education and understanding.
