Recurrent Miscarriage Tests

A miscarriage is a traumatic experience. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for women to experience pregnancy loss. What is unusual is the loss of multiple pregnancies, or recurrent miscarriages. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reports that just one percent of women will have repeated miscarriages.

If a woman has suffered recurrent miscarriages, which is defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages, she should undergo fertility testing. Dr. Sonja Kristiansen offers recurrent miscarriage tests at her Houston, TX, fertility center. These tests allow us to examine the cause of recurrent miscarriages, so that we can guide patients on the path to a healthy full-term pregnancy.

Ultrasound

One of the most common causes of recurrent miscarriages is anatomical abnormalities affecting the uterus or cervix. If the cervix is weak, or if the uterus is abnormal, they may not be able to support a growing fetus. To determine if these types of conditions are the cause of recurrent miscarriages, Dr. Kristiansen performs an ultrasound.

An ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure. Using soundwaves, ultrasound technology creates images of the structures of the body. When testing for the cause of recurrent miscarriages, our Houston patients undergo a transvaginal ultrasound. A small wand is inserted vaginally so that Dr. Kristiansen can examine the uterus and determine if there are any abnormalities or anatomical conditions that are contributing to miscarriages.

Laparoscopic Exam

Often, when testing for the cause of recurrent miscarriages, we recommend a laparoscopic exam. A laparoscopic exam allows for a detailed examination of the pelvic structure. A laparoscopic exam can diagnose conditions such as uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis, all of which may create a hostile uterine environment that increases the risk of miscarriage.

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure, but it is minimally invasive. To perform a laparoscopy, a small incision is made inside the navel. The laparoscope is inserted through this incision. A laparoscope is a thin surgical instrument with a small camera and light. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced to the pelvic cavity so that the laparoscope is able to provide a clear picture of the pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

Karyotype Analysis

Depending on other test results, Dr. Kristiansen may perform karyotype analysis to further explore possible causes of recurrent miscarriages. Karyotype analysis is performed on both the male and female partner. This chromosome analysis examines the number and structure of a person’s chromosomes to determine if there are chromosomal or genetic disorders contributing to recurrent miscarriages. We also perform blood tests to identify whether there are any endocrine disorders or hormone imbalances.

Promoting Pregnancy Success

Recurrent miscarriage tests do not always provide clear answers for what has caused consecutive miscarriages to occur. However, these tests often provide guidance regarding how to best proceed with fertility treatment, so that we can increase the chance of a healthy, full-term pregnancy for our patients. Following recurrent miscarriage testing, Dr. Kristiansen meets with each of her Houston patients to discuss test results and go over appropriate treatment options.
