If you've suffered from recurrent pregnancy loss, you are not alone...

Facts about Recurrent Miscarriage

1% of women trying to conceive are affected by recurrent miscarriages

Recurrent miscarriage is a term used by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) to describe someone who has experienced two or more consecutive miscarriages, ending involuntarily before 20 weeks. This term refers to clinical pregnancies, not biochemical pregnancies. This condition affects about one percent of women trying to conceive.

What Causes Recurrent Miscarriages?

The medical cause of miscarriages that are recurrent can be related to:

Anatomical conditions such as a weak cervix or uterine abnormality

Chromosomal or genetic disorders caused by either the egg or sperm

Endocrine disorders due to hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, or hormone imbalance

Advanced maternal age

Certain lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, smoking, or being over or underweight

Maternal immune tolerance, such as antiphospholipid syndrome, thyroid antibodies, and increased uterine natural killer (NK) cells

Chronic endometriosis

Certain infections including rubella, herpes simplex virus (HSV), and measles

Fertility Testing after Recurrent Miscarriage What to Expect

When more than one miscarriage occurs, it is important to undergo testing immediately to determine the cause. While some cases of recurrent miscarriage are never solved, testing can guide us in the proper direction for treatment. Our state-of-the-art laboratory features the latest diagnostic technology, including:
Once a miscarriage occurs, it is important to undergo testing to determine the cause.
Once a miscarriage occurs, it is important to undergo testing to determine the cause.

Ultrasound

During the testing process, we can perform an examination of the uterus using ultrasound technology. This will help us determine if there are any anatomical abnormalities or conditions contributing to the miscarriages.

Advanced Uterine Anatomy Evaluation

For more detailed diagnostics, we can perform an evaluation of the uterus using saline sonohysterogram to rule out uterine fibroids, PCOS, and endometriosis.

Karyotype Analysis

If at least two miscarriages have occurred, we may recommend karyotype analysis of both the male and female patients. This advanced testing can identify if there are any chromosomal or genetic disorders that may be causing miscarriage issues. We can also take blood samples to identify any endocrine disorders or hormone imbalances.

We're Here for You

Dr K and her entire staff are a GOD SEND! I worked with Blanca and Mayra and they are both angels. I’ve had two miscarriages back to back and when i came to see Dr K i was extremely distraught and just wanted to find out what was wrong with me. She worked very closely with me to find out the root cause of my miscarriages. We ended up doing a medicated cycle and it worked the first round and in currently 7 weeks pregnant and have just graduated from her office to my regular OB’s. I feel extremely blessed to have found Dr K and her staff. I pray anyone reading this has the courage to seek help and treatment because it’s worth it!!! Thanks you Dr k! Thank you Blanca! Thank you Mayra! May god always bless you and your families.

We had such a great experience with Houston Fertility Center! After trying to grow our family for 2.5 years without any luck we finally decided to try a fertility treatment. I had so much anxiety going into this whole process but everyone there was so great to work with. The nurses, Mayra and Blanca were so kind and answered all my questions everytime I went in and Dr. Kristiansen was just so great. She has such a calmness about her and made me feel so comfortable through the entire process. Even Melissa who answers the phone and gets you checked in was sweet! We ended up trying Invocell and it worked on the first time, we are now expecting twins! We can’t thank them enough for everything! I truly felt like they cared about me each time I went in! I will miss seeing these sweet ladies as my visits are now with my OBGYN. I would highly recommend them for your fertility needs!

Treatment Options for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Once we have completed all tests and have a better understanding of the cause, we can recommend the best treatment for your needs. We utilize virtually every type of infertility treatment to help patients achieve their dreams of parenthood.

Medication

For hormone imbalances, we may recommend hormone therapy. A simple change in medication can address various issues or stimulate the ovaries to produce additional eggs. For example, if a woman has low progesterone, we may recommend that she take a progesterone supplement. Some women may also wonder if anticoagulant drugs such as heparin are appropriate if pregnancy loss is recurrent. We can discuss heparin and other options during a consultation at our practice serving the Houston area.

IVF and PGT

For patients with genetic or chromosomal disorders, we may recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF) in combination with pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT). Using PGT, our embryologist can locate the healthiest embryos before they are transferred to the uterus.

Surgical Procedure

If you have PCOS, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids, a surgical procedure can address the condition and provide a healthy environment for the embryo. In many cases, an outpatient surgical procedure or other treatment can greatly improve your chances for a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery.
