Fertility preservation

Fertility Preservation

Women and men may choose to preserve their fertility for various reasons, allowing them to decide when to start their dream family.

Dr. Sonja B. Kristiansen and her knowledgeable team offer fertility preservation services to help patients plan for the future.

Why should you consider our state-of-the-art facility in Houston, TX?

Plan for Your Future with Fertility Preservation

For hopeful mothers, fathers, and couples, fertility preservation opens up a world of possibilities, giving patients control of when to have a child. Preservation allows patients to use young, viable eggs or sperm for conception, or freeze embryos, reducing the risk for complications later on.

For those who have diseases, disorders, or other medical conditions that could negatively affect their fertility, preservation can be life-changing. Our fertility center offers services to patients from greater Houston and visitors from out of town.

Helping Patients Just Like You

Dr. Kristiansen discusses how fertility preservation can help women balance their lifestyles with their goal of starting a family.

Who Can Benefit from Fertility Preservation?

Healthy Women

Women who want to get pregnant in the future may choose to freeze their eggs. Fertility decreases with age, but preservation keeps the option open for patients who may be unsure of their timeline, giving them access to healthy eggs at any time.

Cancer Patients

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation can damage ovarian function as well as testicular health and sperm, affecting your reproductive health. We'll help you understand your options before undergoing cancer treatment and creating a plan.

Medical Conditions

Medical conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or treatment for autoimmune diseases can affect fertility and ovarian function. Certain genetic diseases are also linked to potential infertility.

Exposure to Toxic Chemicals

Environmental toxins such as pesticides, heavy metals, and chemicals can contribute to infertility. Toxins can cause eggs to prematurely age, and contribute to hormone imbalances or low-quality sperm.

Why Choose Us?

You have a choice when it comes to your reproductive future. Whether you're a cancer patient, single woman, or hopeful couple, Dr. Kristiansen can help you plan ahead. When you visit our facility, you're met with a warm and compassionate team to walk you through the process. We'll lay out a clear plan, answer any questions you have, and serve as an advocate throughout the process. I love this place and Dr. K has a high success rate. This is why I initially went to her clinic. They don’t treat you like a business but it’s very personal. I was successful on my first IVF attempt and had a healthy baby girl. I will be using her for my next baby when I’m able. Highly recommended.

We Offer Egg Freezing and More

Our fertility preservation options allow you to plan your future on your terms.

What Are My Preservation Options?

Here at Houston Fertility Center, we offer a range of preservation options to choose from. We conduct an in-depth evaluation to determine which treatment is best for you based on your individual needs. Our facility does not offer preservation via ovarian tissue. Preservation of ovarian tissue involves removing a part of the ovary from the body and freezing it for later use.

Egg Freezing

This process involves the freezing, or cryopreservation, of unfertilized eggs. Women take injectable hormone medication to stimulate their ovaries and produce multiple eggs. After approximately ten days, the eggs are carefully retrieved and stored.

Sperm Freezing

Male patients who wish to preserve their fertility can provide a semen sample, which is then sorted, frozen, and stored for future use. This option can be used in combination with egg freezing, allowing egg and sperm to join when conception is desired.

Embryo Freezing

This process uses in vitro fertilization (IVF). The ovaries are stimulated to promote egg production, and a sperm sample is collected. The eggs and sperm are fertilized in a lab to form one or more embryos, which are then frozen and stored.

Dr. Kristiansen helps patients preserve fertility and start families. From saving healthy eggs to freezing sperm before testicular cancer treatment, she and her team may can help you.

Start Family Planning With In Vitro Fertilization

Fertility preservation can allow you to grow your family in your own time.
IVF

If you or your partner are not ready to start your family now, you can still plan ahead. IVF allows you to use preserved eggs and sperm. Frozen eggs can be fertilized at a later date, or preserved sperm can be thawed for later egg fertilization to create a viable embryo.

In addition, we can also freeze your embryos and save them for use at a later date. Once you or you and your partner are ready to grow your family, we can implant the frozen embryos for you to carry them to term.

Texas Patients Can Consider Gestational Surrogacy

There are many reasons why a patient or a patient and their partner may not be able to carry their embryo after fertility preservation. Cancer surgeries, reproductive system conditions, and poor health may jeopardize an embryo's viability.

If that is the case for you or your partner, you still have another option at our Houston practice: gestational surrogacy. This process allows a surrogate to carry you and your partner's embryo.

The gestational surrogacy process is legal in the state of Texas, provided you follow the law and ensure that a court validates your Gestational Carrier Agreement. While going to court may sound stressful, it can give you peace of mind to have the legal system protecting you and your potential future child's rights.

"Going through infertility is one of the most difficult things a family could go through. Dr. Kristiansen and her staff, Melissa, Mayra, Blanca and Lana helped to ensure the most positive experience. They were always professional and friendly and I always felt like I could call them anytime with all my questions (which I did). They never made me feel like I was just a patient or a number they always made me feel special." Kristina Lesniak

How Does Cancer Treatment Affect My Reproductive Health?

While cancer treatment can be truly life-saving, it also may come with substantial ramifications to your fertility. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy may each influence your reproductive organs.

Even if you do not have a cancer linked directly to your fertility, like testicular cancer, treatment may still lead to infertility. Cancer treatment can cause your ovaries to stop releasing eggs and estrogen. Similarly, cancer treatment can harm sperm production in men. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may still have fertility preservation options.

There Is Hope

Each reproductive journey is different. Our state-of-the-art fertility office in Houston can help you explore your options to preserve your fertility before cancer treatment.

What Fertility Preservation Options Do I Have If I Have Been Diagnosed with Cancer?

Depending on the type of cancer you have, the disease may directly impact your fertility. Ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, and testicular cancer can be treated thanks to modern medicine, but they may cause infertility.

The risk of infertility is why it's a good idea to freeze your eggs, sperm, or embryos before cancer treatment.

You may also be unable to conceive or carry naturally after cancer treatment due to surgical removal of the ovaries or other reproductive organs. Even in that scenario, a gestational surrogate may still be able to carry your child for you.

We live in a world where cancer is increasingly treatable. If we can alleviate some of your infertility worries and give you a little peace of mind in a deeply stressful situation, Houston Fertility Center will be happy to help.
