Who Can Benefit from Fertility Preservation?

The field of reproductive medicine is constantly evolving. One of the most remarkable concepts to emerge over the last few decades is fertility preservation. This treatment involves saving eggs or sperm for future use so patients can conceive biological children when they are ready.

Fertility preservation allows patients to use young, viable eggs or sperm for conception, reducing the risk for complications later on.

There are a few different reasons why individuals may choose fertility preservation. For example, some patients have diseases, disorders, or other medical conditions that could negatively affect fertility, while others may simply wish to wait until they are older to have a child. Fertility preservation allows patients to use young, viable eggs or sperm for conception, reducing the risk for complications later on.

Individuals who can benefit from fertility preservation include those who:

  • Need to undergo chemotherapy or radiation
  • Have endometriosis
  • Have uterine fibroids
  • Have a genetic disease linked to potential infertility
  • Are about to undergo treatment for an autoimmune disease
  • Have been exposed to toxic chemicals
  • Want to delay having children

Your Preservation Options

When it comes to fertility preservation, recommended treatment will be based on your unique needs. At the Houston Fertility Center, we offer a few different cryopreservation methods. These procedures include:

  • Egg freezing: This process involves the freezing – or cryopreservation – of unfertilized eggs. Ovarian stimulation is initiated with injectable hormones. After approximately 10 days, the eggs are retrieved and stored.
  • Sperm freezing: Male patients who wish to preserve their fertility can provide a sperm sample, which is then frozen and stored for possible future use.
  • Embryo freezing: This process uses in vitro fertilization (IVF) to preserve embryos. To begin, the ovaries are stimulated to promote egg production, and a sperm sample is collected. The eggs are then fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory setting. After three to five days, the resulting embryos are frozen and stored for later use.
