Gestational surrogacy is a family building option in which the surrogate has no genetic relationship to the baby. It is the only surrogacy option permitted under Texas state law. An egg is harvested from an egg donor (either the hopeful mother, someone the hopeful parents know, or a donor arranged through an agency), fertilized through in vitro fertilization (IVF), and implanted into the uterus of the surrogate. Dr. Sonja Kristiansen and her team can help you decide if the gestational surrogacy process is right for you during a consultation at our Houston, TX-based practice.
If you are considering a surrogate as a means of growing your family, we can conduct an in-depth consultation in order to determine if this option is the best way to help you.
If you choose to grow your family using gestational surrogacy, one of the most significant decisions you will make is who will carry and deliver your baby. Hopeful parents may want someone they know to serve as the surrogate, or they may wish to find a surrogate with the help of an agency. We collaborate with Prime Genetics and other agencies that conduct a stringent screening process in order to select only the best surrogates.
A gestational surrogacy candidate’s entire medical history will be carefully screened to uncover any risks for miscarriage or other complications. Other factors will be scrutinized for indications that the woman may not be a suitable candidate for gestational surrogacy. Blood work is performed, and the candidate will also meet with a therapist to discuss the emotional issues of carrying a child for another family.
Ideally, a surrogate will have had at least one previous successful pregnancy delivered at full term without complications. It can also be a tremendous benefit if the surrogate has carried for other parents. This can indicate that she can deliver a healthy baby without emotional distress related to giving the baby to the intended parent. This can also indicate that the surrogate is capable of whatever relationship both parties agree upon initially, which may include no interaction with the child.
Handling Your Surrogacy Needs
The key partners in gestational surrogacy are the agency (if you do not use a known surrogate), your attorney, and your fertility specialist. We can handle all of the financial transactions and facilitate all other interactions between all parties for an ethical and convenient process. Having helped to achieve the successful growth of many families using this option, we are prepared to help make every aspect of surrogacy as stress-free as possible for everyone involved.
