Understanding Infertility and the Path to Treatment

The goal of infertility treatment is to identify and address the underlying causes that may be affecting the male or female reproductive systems. At Houston Fertility Center, the process begins with comprehensive testing, including hormone evaluations, imaging, and semen analysis, to uncover any barriers to conception.

Depending on your results, infertility solutions may include:

  1. Lifestyle changes
  2. Medications
  3. Surgical or nonsurgical procedures

Dr. Kristiansen is committed to finding the root cause of your infertility and tailoring a treatment plan that gives you the best chance of success.

What to Expect During Your Fertility Evaluation

At Houston Fertility Center, we take a thorough, personalized approach to diagnosing fertility concerns in both partners. We’ll tailor your care to your specific needs.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination is a fertility treatment that involves transferring semen directly into the uterus with assisted reproductive technology. During an IUI treatment, the sperm are washed, placed into a sterile medium, and injected directly into the uterus. The high placement in the female reproductive tract increases the chance of successful fertilization. Intrauterine insemination is less invasive than IVF and is usually one of the first treatments we recommend to treat infertility. IUI may not be successful in cases of severe male infertility or blocked fallopian tubes.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) With PGT

In vitro fertilization with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) involves fertilizing mature eggs in a controlled environment, embryo incubation and culture, embryo biopsy for chromosome analysis, and then transferring the frozen embryo back into the uterus. IVF with PGT is a revolutionary treatment used to overcome a wide range of fertility issues, including ovulation disorders, damaged fallopian tubes, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and poor sperm mobility. At Houston Fertility Center, we perform frozen embryo transfers only, allowing embryos time to develop fully and supporting a carefully timed transfer.

INVOcell With PGT

The main difference between INVOcell and IVF is that fertilization occurs within the body rather than in a lab. Hormones stimulate ovulation and release mature eggs, which your doctor then retrieves. The egg and sperm cells are placed together in the tiny INVOcell device, which stays securely in the vaginal cavity for three to five days, allowing for incubation. The fact that fertilization occurs within the body is attractive to many patients with certain religious beliefs or those who are uncomfortable with the idea of a lab controlling the early stages of embryonic development.

Egg Donors

Eggs are donated for patients who have lost their ovaries, have premature ovarian failure, or have advanced maternal age. These donors are screened for genetic, emotional, and physical health abnormalities, smoking, drug use, and sexually transmitted diseases. We record the characteristics of our donors so patients can select those who align with their own physical traits if they desire.

Surrogacy

Women who can produce healthy eggs but are unable to use their uterus may consider a gestational surrogate carrier. A donated egg may also be used with a gestational surrogate in the event a woman can’t produce her own eggs. In either case, you may use your partner's sperm or donated sperm to fertilize the egg. Using IVF, we transfer the embryo into the surrogate's uterus to carry until term. However, there is no biological tie between the child and the surrogate.

FAQ About Infertility Treatments in Houston, TX

When should I begin to explore fertility treatments?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests fertility interventions for a healthy couple under the age of 35 if they have failed to get pregnant with regular intercourse within a year. For couples older than 35, fertility testing and treatments are usually explored after six months of trying. However, for patients with existing issues such as known ovulation concerns, your doctor may suggest fertility treatments sooner.

We have received an infertility diagnosis but would like a second opinion. Can you help?

We are happy to provide a second opinion to help you make a more informed decision about your reproductive health.
