How to Prepare for Your First IVF Cycle
Starting IVF is a big step, and if you are feeling a mix of hope, nerves, and a dozen unanswered questions, that is completely normal. Most of the patients who walk into our office for the first time feel exactly the same way.
The good news is that understanding what lies ahead makes the entire experience more manageable. We have guided hundreds of patients through their first IVF cycle at Houston Fertility Center, and one thing we hear over and over again is that the anticipation was harder than the process itself.
Preparation for IVF happens in three distinct phases before your stimulation injections ever begin. Here is what each one involves.
Step 1
Diagnostic Testing and Medical Prep
Before your cycle begins, both you and your partner will undergo a comprehensive evaluation. The goal is to give us a complete picture of your reproductive health so we can build a medication protocol and treatment plan tailored specifically to you. No two patients get the same approach, and these results are what make that possible.
Ovarian Reserve Testing
Blood tests measuring AMH, FSH, and Estradiol give us a reliable estimate of how many eggs your ovaries have available. These results are paired with a baseline ultrasound that allows us to count your antral follicles directly. Together, they help us determine the right stimulation dosage and set realistic expectations for your cycle.
Uterine Assessment
We evaluate the uterine cavity using a baseline ultrasound, and in some cases a saline sonogram (SIS) or hysteroscopy, to check for fibroids, polyps, or scarring that could interfere with implantation. Identifying and addressing these issues before your cycle begins gives your embryo the best possible environment for transfer.
Infectious Disease and Genetic Screening
Both partners complete blood work to screen for infectious diseases, including STIs. We also offer carrier screening for genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis. This testing is a standard part of our protocol and helps us provide the safest, most informed care possible.
Semen Analysis
A semen analysis evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology. The results inform how we approach fertilization and whether additional steps, such as advanced sperm preparation, may be beneficial. We also strongly recommend freezing a semen specimen several weeks before retrieval day as a precaution, so that one variable is already handled before the cycle begins.

Step 2
Lifestyle and Health Optimization
Specialists generally recommend starting this phase two to three months before your cycle. The goal is to support egg quality, uterine health, and your body's overall ability to respond to stimulation medications. Small, consistent changes over time make a real difference.
Vitamins and Supplements
A high-quality prenatal vitamin is the foundation. Beyond that, many fertility specialists add CoQ10 to support mitochondrial function in eggs, Vitamin D to correct a deficiency that is far more common than most patients expect, and Omega-3 fatty acids to support hormonal balance. We review your labs and recommend supplements based on what your results actually show rather than a one-size-fits-all list.
Diet and Weight
A diet built around lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains creates a strong nutritional foundation for your cycle. Maintaining a BMI within the recommended clinical range also matters, as body weight has a measurable effect on hormone levels and treatment response. You do not need to overhaul everything overnight. Gradual, sustainable changes tend to stick better and feel less overwhelming during an already demanding time.
Limiting Toxins
Avoiding tobacco and recreational drugs is strongly recommended. Limiting alcohol and caffeine in the weeks leading up to your cycle is also advisable. These substances can affect egg quality, hormone levels, and implantation. The same guidance applies to partners, since sperm health responds to these factors as well.
Stress Management
Chronic stress can disrupt the reproductive hormones that IVF depends on. Practices like yoga, acupuncture, meditation, and therapy are all well-supported options for managing stress during this period. The emotional side of IVF is just as real as the physical side, and finding reliable outlets before your cycle begins will serve you well during the more demanding weeks ahead.
This is also a good time to line up practical support: time off for monitoring appointments and retrieval, a ride home on procedure day, and someone you trust to lean on during the process.
Step 3
Cycle Synchronization
The final preparation step is cycle synchronization, sometimes called suppression. The goal is to ensure your ovaries produce a cohesive group of follicles and that your uterine lining is in the right condition when stimulation begins. This phase gives your care team precise control over your cycle timing.
Birth Control or Estrogen
You may be prescribed oral contraceptives or estrogen pills for a few weeks before stimulation begins. This is one of the most common points of confusion for new patients, since it feels counterintuitive to take birth control when you are trying to conceive. The purpose is not to suppress fertility permanently but to quiet the ovaries, prevent early ovulation, and create a clean, coordinated starting point for stimulation. Our team will explain exactly why this step is part of your protocol and what to expect during it.
Suppression Check
Before you begin stimulation injections, you will come in for a baseline ultrasound and blood test. This appointment confirms that your ovaries are adequately suppressed, that no dominant follicles have developed ahead of schedule, and that there are no cysts that would interfere with the next phase. Once we get the green light from this check, you start your stimulation medications and your active cycle is officially underway.
What Comes Next
You Are More Ready Than You Think
Once your diagnostic workup is complete, your health is optimized, and your cycle is synchronized, you move into ovarian stimulation, the most active phase of the IVF process. From there, your care team at Houston Fertility Center guides you through every monitoring visit, every result, and every decision along the way.
The patients who feel most at ease going into their cycle are the ones who asked every question they had and got real, direct answers. That is exactly what your consultation is for.
