About IVF Treatment
During IVF treatment, fertility medications are used to stimulate the ovaries and promote egg production. Medication is also used to help the eggs to mature. Once the eggs have reached full maturation, they are retrieved using a thin needle. They are then mixed with sperm extracted from a semen sample provided by the male partner for fertilization.
At either day 3 or day 5 after egg retrieval, the embryo transfer will take place. Using a long, flexible catheter, the embryo is inserted through the vagina and the cervix into the uterus. If the IVF cycle is successful, embryo implantation will occur six to ten days after egg retrieval.
How Is IVF Due Date Calculated?
There can be no doubt that the IVF cycle is more complex than a natural cycle. However, determining the due date after successful pregnancy is not necessarily a more complex matter. In fact, if your IVF cycle is successful, you can get a general idea of your due date using an online IVF due date calculator. Online IVF due date calculators figure out estimated due dates taking into account either the date of a 3-day embryo transfer, a 5-day embryo transfer, or the date of egg retrieval.
A more concrete idea of your due date may be arrived at after your first ultrasound. This ultrasound will be performed a few weeks after your positive pregnancy test. At this point, your due date will be based on information specific to your pregnancy and should therefore be more accurate. Even so, it is important to remember that due dates are simply estimations.
