Checking for Genetic Abnormalities
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, is a performed at our Houston practice to check for genetic abnormalities.
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is a technology where we can remove a cell from each embryo to check for genetic abnormalities. We can check for genetic abnormalities in women who have had multiple miscarriages. We can check for genetic abnormalities in women who are of advanced reproductive age; meaning over age 35. And we can also check for certain known diseases that a couple may be carrying such as sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis, or perhaps the woman or the husband is a carrier for some other genetic abnormality. Then we can place back into the uterus embryos that have tested genetically normal and give them the possibility of having a healthy, normal baby.
